One of my favorite traveling experiences is the act of walking through the front doors of a new hotel and taking in every sensation in full effect. From the interior design and lighting to the music to the smells – it all makes an impression and I fully expect to be impressed. Some boutique hotels get it on a consistent basis (Hotel on Rivington in New York and the 21C Museum Hotel in Louisville) but it is getting harder and harder to impress the savvy traveler.
On a recent trip out to the West Coast, my wife and I stopped into the Malibu Beach Inn and I was delightfully surprised when the front desk attendant asked for my iPhone while he checked us in. He quickly loaded an application called “runtriz” (runtriz.com) while informing us that anything that we would need at any time from anywhere was accessible via this custom app. Now items like room service, house keeping, local shopping ideas, transportation, spa services, wake up calls and more were just one click away. No more worries about being the whiny tourist asking for local nightlight tips and driving directions – just ask the ones and zeros behind the iPhone.
Not only did we get to continue to live like the Jetsons in our pursuit of the ultimate digital lifestyle, but while we were getting served in mobile fashion – the hotel was quietly up-selling hotel amenities, tracking our search habits and operating on a greener level with less paper brought into the entire process. The new Blackberry BOLD app just became available as well.
