Flex iFrame

flex-iframe-logo-128

I havent found a good use for it yet… but if you haven’t played around with the flex-iframe component originally by Christophe Coenraets and then subsequently improved by Brian Deitte you’ll have to check it out.

This component allows you to embed true HTML content within your Flex applications with little effort.

Check out the Google Code project at: http://code.google.com/p/flex-iframe/. In the project Home tab you’ll find examples on basic implementations. They also have an example where you can add simple overlay detection to allow the HTML page to communicate with your Flex application.

In The Process – SZD Giving Thanks

SZD Giving Thanks

Looking back on a recently completed project is a good way to catalog the things you’ve just learned in the process. Seeing a project not only as a destination but as a journey is a good way to grow as a designer as well as a developer.

This series of blog posts will be a sharing of the things that I’ve learned on projects here at coexist concentrating mostly on Flex and Flash development.

Total Immersion

xbox360

Xbox Live launched an update yesterday, allowing their Gold subscribers to interact with Facebook, Twitter, Last.FM, and the Zune.net store. While the integration is not without its flaws, it’s still a welcomed update that opens many doors.

Coupled with last years update which allows subscribers to stream any Netflix Watch Instantly movie through their console, the Xbox 360 now serves as a pretty robust piece of entertainment hardware when compared to its release in 2005.

Working with the GAIA Flash Development Framework

gaia1

GAIA is an open-source front-end Flash Development Framework for AS3 designed to dramatically reduce development time.

The program itself is a plugin for flash that opens up in a window much like the Components Inspector panel. Once you install the plugin creating and starting a project is as simple as clicking the “Create AS3″ button in the GAIA panel.

Hotel Remote Control

runtriz_logo

One of my favorite traveling experiences is the act of walking through the front doors of a new hotel and taking in every sensation in full effect. From the interior design and lighting to the music to the smells – it all makes an impression and I fully expect to be impressed. Some boutique hotels get it on a consistent basis (Hotel on Rivington in New York and the 21C Museum Hotel in Louisville) but it is getting harder and harder to impress the savvy traveler.

On a recent trip out to the West Coast, my wife and I stopped into the Malibu Beach Inn and I was delightfully surprised when the front desk attendant asked for my iPhone while he checked us in. He quickly loaded an application called “runtriz” (runtriz.com) while informing us that anything that we would need at any time from anywhere was accessible via this custom app. Now items like room service, house keeping, local shopping ideas, transportation, spa services, wake up calls and more were just one click away. No more worries about being the whiny tourist asking for local nightlight tips and driving directions – just ask the ones and zeros behind the iPhone.

Not only did we get to continue to live like the Jetsons in our pursuit of the ultimate digital lifestyle, but while we were getting served in mobile fashion – the hotel was quietly up-selling hotel amenities, tracking our search habits and operating on a greener level with less paper brought into the entire process. The new Blackberry BOLD app just became available as well.

Double Feature

double-feature

One of the great things about living and working in the Short North is being able to partake in the monthly gallery hop.

This past Saturday was no exception. Armed with laptops and Projectors, Tyler and I turned the studio into the neighborhood cineplex

I delved in to my collection of movies and concerts for inspiration. The evening started with a dual showing of The French Connection 2, and Franz Ferdinand at the Avalon.
After walking around and checking out some galleries the showing ended with Jay-Z at Madison Square Garden, and a collection of vintage 70’s commercials.

I’ll try and keep the line up fresh and interesting for future gallery hops. Perhaps a dual showing of Halloween and Jacobs Ladder for October?
